For the Hamlyn Park Tennis Club Juniors – From Rob Green

Hello All

Well for most grades the winter tennis season has drawn to a close ……. Well almost!

Girls Grade 2 and Mixed Grade 20 are both 6 team grades so have their final match of the regular season this weekend with their finals starting on 21st August.

Finals matches

Grade 9 Boys will play Grovedale at Drysdale this Saturday. And Grade 14 Boys will play Torquay at Grovedale. Good luck to both grades.

Finals umpiring

Finals umpiring should be no surprise to anyone. As everybody knows, unless your child’s team make the grand final, their grade will be rostered on to umpire during the finals. You will only be asked to umpire once during the finals so please make yourself available when asked. Please avoid making excuses as all that happens is that it gets left to too few which is not fair nor in keeping with the expectations of the Hamlyn Park Tennis Club. The team members should be encouraged to come along and act as linesmen.

The rostered umpiring this week is:

Grade 7 umpiring the match between Drysdale & Newcomb at Moolap. And Grade 18 umpiring the match between Highton & Wandana Heights White at our home courts at Hamlyn Park.

I can’t be entirely certain but it’s likely that both Grade 3 boys and Grade 20 mixed will be rostered on for umpiring next weekend – the 21st of August.

AGM next Tuesday

Just a reminder that the club AGM is on next Tuesday at which a new junior committee will be endorsed as will a new junior co-ordinator.  I urge you to come along and be involved in the club and would encourage any one willing to join the junior committee. Many hands make light work!

Summer Tennis for Juniors

Whilst winter comp is not yet finished, we need to submit the teams for the summer comp in only a couple of weeks. If your child intends playing the summer competition and you haven’t already added their name to the list on the notice board, can you please respond by return email. Even if they’re not going to play I’d appreciate an email as it will save the new junior committee from having to chase you up by phone call. There’s a break of about a month before the summer comp starts about the beginning of October.

Good luck to all junior teams competing.

Hamlyn Park Tennis Club scores goals in Good Sports Program

Good Sports is a nationwide program that supports sporting clubs to become safer, healthier and more family friendly through the responsible management of alcohol. In Victoria there are close to 1,700 clubs in the program, with over 650 having achieved Level 3 Accreditation.

Hamlyn Park Tennis Club as been recognised this week for its longstanding commitment to reducing alcohol problems, as part of the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program. While stories about sports stars struggling with alcohol problems, or behaving badly after a big night out are rife in the media these days, clubs such as Hamlyn Park Tennis Club are managing alcohol responsibly through the assistance of the Good Sports program and community partners.

The club has been rewarded this week for its long term commitment to Good Sports, which requires adherence to liquor licensing laws; club members to be Responsible Serving of Alcohol trained; policies to be implemented relating to safe transport; smokefree clubrooms; changing the way functions involving alcohol are conducted and an end to the use of alcohol for fundraising and prizes. This framework encourages a safer, healthier and more family-friendly club.

Victorian Good Sports Manager, Rod Glenn-Smith, is proud of all the clubs that achieve Level 3 Accreditation, but staying at that level for so long and remaining committed to the principals of the program is an especially impressive achievement.

“I’m very excited that Hamlyn Park Tennis Club has achieved this significant milestone. The club has consistently demonstrated, over a number of years, that it is committed to promoting responsible attitudes towards alcohol, attitudes which are then passed on to players, supporters, and their families, benefiting the whole community.”

Rod Glenn-Smith emphasises that “this program is a ‘win-win’ for everyone. Clubs grow and prosper, the communities are safer places and the club is a more attractive place to be for its members”.

Notice of Annual General Meeting – Tuesday 17th August 2010 @ 7:30pm

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 17th August 2010, at 7:30pm at the clubrooms.  A cordial invitation is extended to all members.

The Annual General Meeting will be as much a discussion about the future of the tennis club as it is about electing a new committee so we look forward to seeing as many members there as possible.

All positions become vacant at the Annual General Meeting, these are President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, General Management Committee Members and Sub-Committee Members for Selection / Match and Juniors.

Any member who wishes to nominate for any of these positions is most welcome.  No special qualifications are necessary, only a few hours of your time and the satisfaction of helping your club, by having a say in what goes on.  If you would like further information on these positions, please contact the President, David Wieddman on 0413 715 710, or alternatively, contact the Secretary, Colin Shallue on 5278 5513.

Members wishing to nominate a member for a position or have any item discussed during General Business at the Annual General Meeting or any constructive ideas towards the betterment of the club should submit the matter in writing to the Secretary, no later than Sunday 15th August.

IMPORTANT NOTICE – Question: Do you want the tennis club to continue with its Junior Saturday Pennant teams?  If you’re answer is “yes”, please read on!

With the recent increase in participating junior teams on Saturday morning, there is an urgent need for at least 2 Junior Committee Members to help with the general co-ordination and running of teams each Saturday morning.

The roles are quite straight-forward and involve ensuring teams know where and when they are playing as well as just helping out generally around the club on Saturday morning whilst the Juniors are playing.  Importantly, you will also be assisted by a “Parent Captain” that will be allocated to each Junior team making your role even easier to carry out and manage.

We need to ensure we have these roles fulfilled otherwise quite simply, without any assistance, the club will be forced to reduce the amount of teams that participate in the upcoming pennant season.

For more information as to how you can help, contact David Wiedmann on 0413 715 710 or Joe Horvat on 0405 666 966.

Hamlyn Park Tennis Club – Junior Club Championship Results – 14th Feb

**REVIEW: Junior Club Championships – Sunday 14 Febrauary**

The re-scheduled Junior Club Championship was held on Sunday 14 February and with glorious weather, the turnout was great with more than 20 players competing from each of the 7 junior teams the club had in summer competition.

The format was a round robin with sets played at first to 4 games. All players played 3 sets.

There was lots of support and encouragement for the players from their extended familiies. There was also welcome support from the junior committee and a number of parents on the day.

The boys were well represented and were split into 4 “grades”. The girls were not as well represented and were only split into 3 “grades”. The results were as follows:

                                       Winner                           Runner Up

Boys 1                        Nelson Roso                     Daniel Gibson

Boys 2                        Dario Sestak                    Raleigh Phillips

Boys 3                        Lincoln Luther                  Xavier Consedine

Boys 4                        Sebastian MacDougall

Girls 1                        Alessia Roso

Girls 2                        Tamika Willougby               Emily Krahe

Girsl 3                        Ellen Nagle                        Rebecca Claridge

There were lots of smiling faces and all the kids had a good day.  The tennis was followed by a trophy presentation and sausage sizzle.  All in all, a good day for the club!
